What to Expect

The thought of visiting a church for the first time can be intimidating for some of us. We want you to feel at home and welcome you as an honored guest. To make your visit more comfortable we offer a short "preview" of a typical service at the Grant Street Church of Christ.

Bible Classes

Prior to the Sunday morning service, we have Bible classes for every age group. Our class time starts, approximately 9:00 and ends at 9:45. Please visit our Bible Classes page for more information and class locations.

Worship Service

Setting

We worship in a room referred to as the auditorium. There are no reserved seats, so sit anywhere. Currently, you can expect between 190 to 215 of us meeting with you. The doors on each side of the pulpit give access to restrooms. For the convenience of adults with children who need special attention, there is a nursery with attendants located in the classroom area to the right of the pulpit.

Singing

Ephesians 5:19

Grant Street loves to sing. We sing "acappella". That is without the accompaniment of musical instruments. We use a projection screen to display the words and music. If you have trouble seeing the screen, we have songbooks in the rack where you sit. Feel free to use them and you are welcome to join in the song service with us.

Praying

Acts 2:42

As a church, we believe in the power of prayer and we pray for specific needs and requests of our members and our guest. We will have several public prayers during our service, led by men. Again, you will not be required or asked to do anything.

Lord's Supper (Communion)

I Corinthians 11:23-26

We observe this memorial every Sunday. The Lord's Supper is a way of remembering the sacrifice Jesus made on our behalf. During this time, plates containing pieces of unleavened bread (they look like crackers) will be passed throughout the congregation. The bread symbolizes the body of Jesus. Each participant will break off a piece of the bread and eat it; spending a moment meditating and remembering Jesus in the way they choose. Then trays with small cups will be passed. The cups will contain grape juice, symbolizing the blood of Jesus, and participants spend meditative time remembering that our sins have been forgiven. Once again, with the exception of passing the tray as it comes down your row, you are not required to participate. At some time, you may want more explanation concerning the Lords Supper.

Offering (Collection)

1 Corinthians 16:1, 2

If you visit on a Sunday morning, trays will be passed to collect the weekly financial offering. As our guest, you are not expected to make a donation. Feel perfectly comfortable in just passing the collection plate on down the row.

Preaching

Romans 10:14-15

We have a time after the Lord's Supper that is dedicated to teaching and preaching. You will notice that the preacher doesn't have a title. He will not be referred to as Pastor or Reverend. He will probably be referred to as brother or by his first name. He will not be wearing any ecclesiastical clothing which sets him apart. The reason for this is that we are all equal in the priesthood of believers.

Invitation to Respond

Acts 2:38

At the close of the lesson, the speaker will encourage those who wish to respond publicly to come to the front of the auditorium while the congregation sings. This is completely voluntary. Some may respond for baptism, some to confess sins, some to ask for prayer for a specific need or to share some special gratitude or praise. Some may come to say they want to join this church family. If anyone responds for baptism, you will get to witness the baptism during the service. Inviting worshippers to take their "next step" towards Jesus is a part of every service. Don't feel ill-at-ease during the invitation; you will not be singled out in any way

Closing the Service

Finally we will have a closing song and prayer to complete our period of worship. It is our hope and desire that you will linger for a few moments and give us an opportunity to meet you and become better acquainted. We also hope that will join us again in the near future. If you have questions please feel free to ask any of our members and they will be more than glad to either answer your question or find someone who can.
